SUMMARY:2025 Spring DOECAA Conference
DESCRIPTION:Register for the DOECAA Spring Conference!\n \nPlease join us April 15-16 for the 2025 DOECAA Spring Conference at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in beautiful Oak Ridge\, Tennessee.\nConference Materials\nRegistration and Badging \nRegistration for in-person attendance at the conference has closed. But you can still register to attend virtually. You can also still register for the networking reception\, the new attorney breakout session\, and for the ORNL tours (see below). \nDOECAA will be seeking CLE credit in select states.  \nFor visitors who are U.S. nationals\, an expedited badging process will be available when you arrive at the meeting facility. \nTickets are being sold separately for the networking reception on April 15. \nWe are also having a breakout session for attorneys new to the DOE/NNSA complex on April 16. \nORNL Tours \nIf you’d like to go on a tour\, you must sign up in advance by clicking here. Tours will fill up fast. Please sign up for only one tour. \nAdvanced Plant Phenotyping Laboratory (APPL): The Advanced Plant Phenotyping Laboratory (APPL) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory is a cutting-edge research facility at the forefront of decoding\, designing\, and deploying the crops of tomorrow. Leveraging state-of-the-art imaging technologies\, artificial intelligence\, and automation\, APPL accelerates scientific discoveries that improve crop resilience\, increase yields\, and support abundant\, secure\, and affordable domestic energy for the nation. The system offers one of the most diverse suites of imaging capabilities for plant phenotyping in the world\, allowing research teams to see beyond the human eye to uncover critical insights into plant genetics and performance.  https://www.ornl.gov/appl \nFrontier Supercomputer (OLCF)/Graphite Reactor: This tour will start at OLCF which is home to two of the world’s fastest supercomputers—the Summit IBM AC922 and the Frontier HPE-Cray EX—supported by world-class data management and analysis tools. In May 2022\, the OLCF debuted Frontier as the world’s first exascale supercomputer\, achieving 1.102 exaflops. That performance was updated in May 2023 to 1.194 exaflops\, making it No. 1 on the TOP500 list and faster than the next 4 supercomputers on that list combined. The OLCF’s Summit supercomputer\, a 200 petaflops system\, debuted in June 2018\, and in May 2023 Summit was still in the top 10 fastest supercomputers in the world. The tour will continue on to the X-10 Graphite Reactor built in only nine months as part of the Manhattan Project to show that plutonium could be extracted from irradiated uranium slugs. https://www.olcf.ornl.gov/ and https://www.ornl.gov/content/graphite-reactor \nSpallation Neutron Source (SNS): SNS produces neutrons with an accelerator-based system that delivers short (microsecond) proton pulses to a steel target filled with liquid mercury through a process called spallation. Those neutrons are then directed toward state-of-the-art instruments that provide a variety of capabilities to researchers across a broad range of disciplines\, such as physics\, chemistry\, biology\, and materials science. https://neutrons.ornl.gov/sns \nHigh Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR): Completed in 1965 and operating at 85 megawatts\, HFIR’s steady-state neutron beam is the strongest reactor-based neutron source in the United States. The thermal and cold neutrons produced by HFIR are used to study physics\, chemistry\, materials science\, engineering\, and biology. The intense neutron flux\, constant power density\, and constant-length fuel cycles are used by more than 500 researchers each year for neutron scattering research into the fundamental properties of condensed matter. https://neutrons.ornl.gov/hfir \nManufacturing Demonstration Facility (MDF): Guided tour of the United States’ most effective laboratory consortium model for accelerating manufacturing innovation for energy systems. Research currently being conducted include the fields of additive manufacturing\, composites\, convergent manufacturing platforms\, machining and machine tools\, novel alloys\, renewable and recyclable materials\, robots\, automation and controls and smart manufacturing. https://www.ornl.gov/facility/mdf \nTravel and Lodging Info \nThe closest airport to ORNL is Knoxville McGhee Tyson (TYS) Airport. It’s about a 40-minute drive from the airport to ORNL. \nOak Ridge National Laboratory Guest House   \nLocated on the ORNL campus within walking distance of the conference location. \nA limited number of rooms are being held for DOECAA until April 7. Travelers must call the Guest House at 865-576-8101 and mention the DOECAA Spring Conference to access the reserved block of rooms (no need to call if you have already reserved a room).  \nTownPlace Suites by Marriott \n300 S. Rutgers Ave. \nOak Ridge\, TN\n865-409-5059 \nHoliday Inn Express & Suites \n114 Tulsa Road\nOak Ridge\, TN\n865-298-1990

SUMMARY:Breakout Session for Attorneys new to DOE/NNSA Complex
DESCRIPTION:The DOE/NNSA complex can be. . .well\, a bit complex\, especially for newcomers\, regardless of whether you are a seasoned general counsel or early in your career\, or somewhere in between.\nIf you are new* to the DOE/NNSA attorney community\, first\, welcome! And second\, you’re in the right place! This inaugural event\, led by Josh Miller from the Kansas City National Security Campus\,  will provide an overview of the DOE/NNSA complex\, address some of the features and quirks that likely make it different from any other place you have worked\, and bring ideas and suggestions from a panel with experience across the complex.\n*  There is no hard and fast definition of what “new” means. Any attorneys who have joined the DOE/NNSA complex within the past few years are welcome to attend\, but if capacity limits dictate\, we may prioritize seats for our newest colleagues.\nIt’s only a 90 minute session\, so we won’t answer every question\, but we’ll do our best to at least scratch the surface. And if people like it\, DOECAA may schedule additional sessions in the future to delve into more detail.\nYou do need to register\, but there is no charge for this breakout session\, and it is open to everyone in the DOECAA community whether you are attending the fall conference or not. It will take place during lunch in an adjoining room for those attending in person. A virtual option is also available.
